What is a Smart Home Hub?

by Dale Dauterive

1. Hubba Hubba

The world of smart home systems may seem complicated, but the idea of a smart home hub is pretty simple. You have a whole bunch of different smart devices at home, right? The idea of a hub is having one central THING that controls all of them.

That’s pretty much the basic idea. See, it's not that complicated, right? Of course not. And now that you know what a smart hub is, let’s take a look at some different smart home hubs and what they can do for your home!

2. Samsung SmartThings Hub

Before we look at the Samsung SmartThings Hub, let’s just list some of the things it works with: Google Assistant. Amazon Alexa. Honeywell. Yale. Kwikset. Caseta by Lutron. Ring. With the hub and SmartThings app, you can bring together and use your different devices with voice control, routines that you set up, or even further automate them.

There’s a reason Samsung calls their hub the “brain” of a smart home. If you think of your house right now, it’s a “body” filled with all sorts of smart devices, but nothing is guiding them. That’s where the hub comes in! It really is the brain that makes the whole house work.

3. Google Nest Home Max

Of course, Google is a big player in this space, so they have their own smart home hub -- the Google Nest Hub Max.

With a 3 inch woofer and stereo speakers, it’s no surprise that you can listen to music --- or stream YouTube -- right from the Hub’s 10-inch HD screen. It can even double as its own security camera feed with Nest Aware, and it connects with a wide range of devices from companies like Sony, LG, Vizio, Philips, Polk, Netflix, Caseta by Lutron, Nest, and more!

4. Amazon Echo Show 5

If you are more of an Alexa person, then Amazon’s Echo Show 5 is the smart home hub you are looking for. Voice control, video calls, personalization options, calendars, weather, and even privacy features, the Echo Show 5 has a lot to show for itself.

It can display on-screen lyrics with Amazon music, so you’ll never quite have that fight over what that line of that song is actually saying again. It also comes with over 80,000 built in skills -- try one out and see just how much it knows!

These are just a few of the different smart home hub options that are available. If you have more questions -- or are unsure if a smart home hub is the best route for your smart home -- reach out! We’ll be glad to walk you through the process and help you find the smart home hub solution that is best for you and your family.
