Who needs a drive-in theater when you can have a walk-in theater right in your own backyard?
There’s just something about sitting outside, eating popcorn, and relaxing as you watch your favorite movies on a giant screen. It’s a great feeling, and it’s one that you can easily replicate at home in your own backyard.
Interested? We thought you would be. Here’s what you need to turn your own home into a private movie theater, so you can watch your favorite movies over and over again in a true theater-like setting.
A Projector
Nothing says home movie night quite like a projector.
There are many reasons to go with a projector for your backyard theater: The primary reason is usually size, as TVs currently top out at 100”. The second reason is cinematic performance. A projector and screen can faithfully reproduce cinematic aspect ratios without giving you bars at the top and bottom of your screen. They also produce a more natural picture for content natively recorded in film, as they’re not hindered by adjustments in TVs made to correct for motion blur.
A Screen
While some people may be content projecting an image onto a white wall, this is not recommended as it greatly reduces picture quality. The quality of the screen you buy can almost be as important as the quality of the projector you buy. Screens come in a variety of materials and mounting solutions. For your outdoor solution, imagine a giant motorized screen popping up from behind your pool and creating the perfect setting to watch the game or a movie on a warm summer night. Pretty cool, right?
A Sound System
You do want to hear the movie you are watching, don’t you? And heck, since it’s outside, your neighbors might as well hear it over in their yard, too. You want big sound to go with that big screen, otherwise you might find yourself struggling to hear audio coming from the projector – or your video source’s – speakers.
You could opt for permanent in-ground speakers, and that way you’d always have great outdoor speakers for other outdoor events or pool parties. That’s one of the best ways to go, as it provides a powerful sound solution that you won’t have to set up and take down every time you want to watch a movie.
Some Seats
You’ve put time, effort, and money into your backyard theater – don’t let all that go to waste by making people sit on blankets on the ground or very, very uncomfortable lawn chairs. Instead, opt for comfortable, portable theater seats – but make sure they are OK to be used outdoors! The last thing you want is inclement weather ruining your new seating arrangements.
And of course, Snacks!
Screen? Check. Speakers? Check. Seating? Check. You’ve almost got your own backyard home theater taken care of...what else could you possibly need?
Ah yes! Food. Whether you want to go all out with an outdoor popcorn cart and slushy machine, or just want to play things low key with a snack counter filled with candy, you can’t have an outdoor theater and not be prepared to feed people.
Forget having to leave the house, get in the car, and sharing a great movie experience with a bunch of noisy people at the drive-in. Watch what movies you want to – when you want to watch them – right in the comfort of your own backyard.
