Listening Room 101

by Bill Welles

1. What is a listening room?

Maybe you are a complete audiophile, or maybe you’ve never heard the term “two channel audio” before. Either way, you may or may not have heard of a listening room before. Don’t worry -- we’re here to help educate.

The concept isn’t complicated, even if the execution can be -- a listening room is a dedicated room in your house for you to listen to music! Imagine your perfect musical haven, comfortable seating, and all of it centered around two speakers and a music hub.

Sounds pretty great, if you ask us.

2. Where should you put it?

There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to deciding which room to convert into your dream listening room. First off, you want to avoid anything with concrete floor or cinder block walls -- things just won’t sound good, and the lack of insulation in these rooms can hurt your electronics. Ideally, you want a temperature controlled space that is closed off from the rest of the house somehow.

3. What Goes In It?

Speakers. Something to sit in. A receiver. Anything else that makes you feel relaxed and in the mood for music. It’s your room, so it should reflect your personality, as well.

It’s also important to decide your budget at this step. And for the best listening experience, you are better off leaving things like measuring for the best spot to sit or calibrating the equipment to a professional. And that’s where we come in! We’re glad to help you plan out and install your listening room.

4. Anything Else?

Of course there’s more! This is just the 101 lesson, after all. There are a lot of other things to keep in mind, like how you should avoid hard surfaces that can reflect sound, how acoustic panels can help shape the soundscape of your room, the proper placement of the speakers, acoustical distortions, and more. Setting a room up can be a lot of fun if you are into the technical intricacies of music, but even if you aren’t, everyone can benefit from a space dedicated to enjoying music.
